DAY 1 AIRPORT / PINNAWALA / MAWANELLA / KANDY

Arrive at the Bandaranaike International Airport and be met by a a representative of Island Holiday Tours, who will warmly welcome you and thereafter take you on your tour as per the itinerary.

Proceed direct to Kandy.

En route you can visit the famous Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage for a one of a kind viewing and interacting experience with the magnificent elephants within.

Pinnawala is the home for young Elephants who have been displaced or lost from their natural habitat. This is the only such sanctuary in the world; you will watch the beasts being fed their quota of milk from handheld bottles. The nearby river played a dominant role in this regard, and in 1984, the first baby of Pinnawala was born. The success story of Pinnawala has drawn the attention of scientists from all over the world. En route you can also visit the Mawanella Spice Gardens.

Once you arrive in Kandy check-in to the hotel In the evening after having a good rest after your travel, you can witness the Kandy city.

Kandy perhaps is Sri Lanka’s most beautiful town. Set 488 meters above sea level, Kandy is Sri Lanka’s most visited place after Colombo. The focal point of the town is the golden-roofed ‘Dalada Maligawa’, where the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha is enshrined. There are numerous shrines and temples in and around Kandy, where you will see rare paintings, frescoes, and stone carvings.

Late evening visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic which is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple.

These classical dance forms are associated with the performance of various rituals and ceremonies which are centuries old and are based on the folk religion and folk beliefs going back to times before the advent and acceptance of Buddhism by the Sinhalese people in the third century B.C.
